How to Make a Histogram on a TI-84 (Step by Step)

Short on time? Paste your numbers into our free histogram maker and download a finished chart in under a minute, with no software and no formulas.

Step 1: Enter your data

TI-84STAT›1:Edit…›L1

  1. Press STAT, then 1:Edit…
  2. To clear old data, move the cursor up onto the L1 heading, press CLEAR, then ENTER.
  3. Type each value into L1, pressing ENTER after each one.

Step 2: Turn on a histogram stat plot

TI-842nd›Y= (STAT PLOT)›1:Plot1›On›Type: histogram

  1. Press 2nd then Y= to open STAT PLOT, and choose 1:Plot1.
  2. Highlight On and press ENTER.
  3. For Type, choose the histogram icon: the third icon in the top row.
  4. Set Xlist: L1 and Freq: 1.

Also press Y= and clear or turn off any equations, otherwise they will be graphed on top of the histogram.

Step 3: Graph it

TI-84ZOOM›9:ZoomStat

Press ZOOM then 9:ZoomStat. The calculator chooses a window and a bin width that fit your data.

Step 4: Set your own bins

405060708090100Xmin = 40Xmax = 100Xscl = 10
On a TI-84, Xmin is where the first bar starts, Xscl is the bar (bin) width, and Xmax is where the last bar ends.

Press WINDOW. On a TI-84, the bins are controlled by the x-axis settings:

  • Xmin: the start of the first bin, such as 40.
  • Xmax: the end of the last bin, such as 100.
  • Xscl: the bin width, such as 10.
  • Ymin: set it a little below 0 (such as −2) so the bars aren’t hidden behind the menu at the bottom.
  • Ymax: a little above the tallest bar.

Press GRAPH. Then press TRACE and use the arrow keys to read each bar: the screen shows min=40, max<50, n=3. Each bin includes its lower edge and excludes its upper edge.

Graphing a frequency table

If you have classes and frequencies instead of raw data, put a value from each class (such as its lower limit) in L1 and the frequencies in L2. In the stat plot, set Freq: L2. Set Xmin and Xscl to match the classes, so each value lands in the right bar.

Get the statistics too

Press STAT, go right to CALC and choose 1:1-Var Stats with List: L1. You get the mean (x̄), sample standard deviation (Sx), population standard deviation (σx), n, minX, Q1, Med, Q3 and maxX. Our five-number summary calculator uses the same quartile method by default, so you can check your work.

Troubleshooting

  • ERR: INVALID DIM usually means a stat plot is turned on for an empty list. Turn the other plots off in STAT PLOT.
  • ERR: DIM MISMATCH: L1 and L2 have different lengths when Freq: L2 is used.
  • Bars are too thin or too wide: change Xscl in WINDOW.
  • Want a box plot instead? In STAT PLOT, the first icon on the second row is the modified box plot (it shows outliers) and the second is the standard box plot.
